To be honest, I’m not a super-fast reader. I’m a great reader, but I’m not an especially fast reader. I take practice and I read a lot. The answer key to osmosis, the answer to the question I asked you with the title of this post, is that I find the book “The Three Levels of Self-Awareness” to be a great reference for this question.
The Three Levels of Self-Awareness is a book about how to think clearly and effectively about our thoughts and emotions. The book is written by three famous psychologists: Carl Gustav Jung, Albert Einstein, and Abraham Maslow. The book is a collection of Jungian and Maslowian theories, and it’s written from the perspective of an academic.
The premise of osmosis is that we need to be aware of what we are thinking and feeling, and to be able to deal with it. An example of self-awareness is when you notice a thought coming to you, and are able to say to yourself, “That’s not right. I should be reacting to that thought.
To deal with a thought you must think about it. To deal with a thought is to deal with the thought. That is the core concept.
You have to think about it. It is the process to deal with your own thoughts. To think about something is to think about it, and to think about something is to deal with the thought that is the source of that thought. So to deal with a thought is to deal with it because it is the source of the thought and because you can think about it.
It seems the best way we can start to cope with the fact that we have a day where we are doing the exact same thing over and over again is to think about our day. When you reflect on a day you realize it’s the same day over and over again. It’s like when you are trying to sleep and you think about all the things you have to do tomorrow.
That feeling that you are doing the exact same thing over and over again, and you can’t sleep for one minute and you still think about the things you have to do tomorrow. That feeling, that thought, is the source of the thought and because you can think about it, you can cope with the thought. osmosis is serious business.
The word osmosis is from the French word for cloud. We’ll be talking about the philosophical and psychological side of osmosis in the next chapter. But in this chapter we’ll be looking at a common issue that many people experience: the feeling that what you are doing is “in your head” or in some other way you have a mental representation of what you are doing.
The next time you get a headache, or you have a bad back, or you just can’t seem to get your mind to shut up, try thinking about osmosis. You’ll likely laugh and say, “I’m serious. I can’t help thinking about osmosis.” And if you do, I promise you will feel better.
Okay, so the point of osmosis, like many other popular practices in the world, is that it is a coping mechanism. It’s used to help us cope. But it can also be used to hurt. In the case of osmosis, it allows us to feel good when we are in the grips of our day-to-day problems.
