Social critics of marketing argue that marketing is based on false advertising so it is impossible to really know what the consumer is getting or how to market it.

I’d argue there’s more than just advertising and false advertising. The idea that advertisers can know what a consumer is going to think, say, or otherwise express in a given product is not true.

The consumer is the ultimate decision maker in the marketing business. So it is a good idea to give consumers the information they need and want. But as with any business decision, it is also important to listen to consumers and take their feedback into account. If you want to get the most out of marketing, then you need to be as open-minded and open-hearted as you can be.

Sometimes, even when you have your ear to the ground, you hear a loud, inarticulate voice yelling “DON’T!” or “DON’T!” I’ve seen these things happen too. But if you want to be an effective and fun marketing person, you can’t afford to ignore those people. And you don’t have to take their advice.

It may not be easy to hear when you’re in a noisy, crowded, noisy environment, but you can always get your ears to the ground and listen to what people are telling you. It may be that they’re right, and that you should not be doing what you’re doing by the way.

Just because someone says something doesn’t make it true. And just because someone in the marketing world says something doesn’t make it right. But it does make you think. I find it very interesting, and I’m sure you do too. You’d think you’d find it hard to get off your butt and start making changes, but it’s actually surprisingly easy.

All of the above applies to marketing and branding. The point is, marketing is about the process of making things. When you make a product, you have to consider the people who will be using it, the costs of making it, and the ways of making it. You need to consider how you want to package it, how you want to sell it, and how you want to promote it. The best marketing isnt about just selling things.

There are a ton of social media companies, and plenty of marketing gurus, that will tell you that the best type of marketing isnt sales, it is about “influencing” the buying process. While I agree that in theory that should be true, in practice it is not. For example, Facebook and Twitter are not the best ways of reaching out and influencing the buying process. In fact, they’re pretty terrible.
